La autofagia, un proceso vital para degradar los componentes celulares dañados, es crucial para mantener la homeostasis de las proteínas y los orgánulos. En los seres humanos, el envejecimiento altera la autofagia, en particular en el cerebro, lo que conduce a enfermedades neurodegenerativas como el Alzheimer. La disminución de la función autofágica promueve la acumulación de proteínas tóxicas, como la β-amiloide y la tau, lo que acelera la progresión de la enfermedad. Además, la senescencia celular, inducida por el deterioro de la autofagia, exacerba el deterioro cognitivo en los seres humanos que envejecen. Mejorar la autofagia podría contrarrestar potencialmente estos efectos y proporcionar beneficios terapéuticos.
