El COVID-19 Induce Senescencia en el Cerebro, y los Senolíticos Ofrecen Posible Tratamiento.

Senolytic therapy alleviates physiological human brain aging and COVID-19 neuropathology

Resumen: Investigadores del Instituto Australiano de Bioingeniería y Nanotecnología, y del Instituto de Biociencia Molecular de la University of Queensland (UQ) en Australia, revelan que las células senescentes, implicadas en enfermedades neurodegenerativas y el envejecimiento, se acumulan en los organoides cerebrales humanos envejecidos. El COVID-19 exacerba esta senescencia, impactando la salud neurológica. El estudio revela que el SARS-CoV-2, en particular la variante Delta, induce la senescencia celular. Los senolíticos, fármacos que eliminan las células senescentes, alivian la replicación viral y previenen la senescencia en los organoides cerebrales, mejorando los resultados clínicos en ratones infectados. Los hallazgos sugieren que los tratamientos senolíticos podrían mitigar la neuropatología de la COVID-19 en humanos.
